The Colonials fell 73-66 to the St. Joseph’s University Hawks on Saturday at the Smith Center despite two late-game runs and outscoring their opponent in the second half. Sophomore guard Langston Galloway, who notched a game leading 18 points, added eight points to the Hawk’s first half 15-0 run. With 11:40 remaining the first half, the Colonials struggled to get possessions and were out-rebounded 10-5. A David Pellom layup finally ended the run at 7:35.
Pellom earned his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Pellom was one of four Colonials players to score in double digits. Guards Tony Taylor and Lasan Kromah led the team with 14 and 13 points while Bryan Bynes scored 10.
GW’s poor first-half rebounding and inability to box out led to buckets on the other side. The Colonials allowed nine second chance points in the first half. They came out after the intermission with a stronger inside game against a Hawks defense that transitioned between man-on-man and 1-3-2 coverage. SJU outrebounded GW 43-30.
The Colonial’s offense struggle moving the ball in the first half, only recording one assist from Taylor. They established an inside game in the second half and took less contested outside shots to dish out a combined eight game assists.
Head coach Mike Lonergan’s squad entered the intermission down 37-20. Kromah’s 13 points all came in the second half to contribute to both of the Colonials’ late game runs. Kromah’s layup at 18:20 opened the second half with an 8-2 run. A 9-3 run at 12:41,punctuated by a pick-and-roll from Taylor to Bynes, brought GW’s deficit to 58-54.
After being outshot 55% to 31% in the first half, the Colonials’ second half boosted their offensive production to 41% after shooting 50% after the intermission. The Hawks finished the night shooting 45%.
The matchup, with 3.774 intendance, was part of GW’s Homecoming weekend. A 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held during halftime.
The Colonials dropped to 9-17 overall and 4-8 in A-10. SJU improved to 18-10 and 8-5 in conference. GW heads to UNC Charlotte on Wednesday to take on the 49ers.
